Leadership Memo 2025-2
Leadership is often painted as a path to influence and impact. But what no one tells you is that it comes with hidden challenges that can only be learned through experience. And no textbook or training can fully prepare you for them.
Here are five leadership truths that no one tells you upfront:
1. Your time is never your own.
As a leader, your team comes first. So be ready to adjust your plans and availability to support the people you serve. It might mean sacrificing your carefully crafted schedule, but that’s part of the job.
2. Impact takes time.
Real change doesn’t happen overnight. It can take years to see the full effect of your influence, especially when it comes to people. Along the way, you’ll likely face long stretches where it feels like nothing is working. Don’t be disappointed or discouraged. Keep going anyway.
3. You are always being watched.
Every action, inside and outside of work, is observed and judged—often unfairly. There’s no rulebook for perception, but great leaders rise above the noise, stay true to their values, and lead with integrity.
4. Gratitude is rare.
Leadership often feels like a thankless job. You give, and give, and give, without much recognition. But appreciation isn’t the goal. The real reward lies in the impact you create. If you’re waiting for applause, you’re in the wrong role.
5. No one is coming to rescue you.
Leadership can be lonely. Whether or not you have the title, the weight of responsibility is yours to carry. You own the failures, redirect praise to your team, and stay resilient when things fall apart. That’s what true leadership demands.
At the end of the day, leadership is a choice, one you must make daily. You’ll experience the highs of joy, learning, camaraderie, and growth, but they come with the lows of sacrifice, disappointment, and loneliness.
To everyone who chooses to lead, whether formally or informally, don’t give up when the journey gets tough. Keep going.
Because in the end, success favors the courageous.
If you’re a senior Christian leader feeling the weight of leadership alone—know that you don’t have to carry it by yourself.
I bring together and facilitate a group of like-minded Christian business leaders where you can safely discuss challenges, receive faith-based guidance, and learn from others who’ve been there. Together, we strive to grow our businesses on Biblical principles while thriving personally and spiritually.
