5 ways to develop the character qualities that stand you out at work

We have been in a mini-series discussing how to stand out at work so you can get promoted. If you develop those five traits, you will get noticed because it will be unusual. That’s not the way most people live.

Not with likability, that’s a life of relationships. Love capacity, that’s a life of learning. Reliability, that’s a life of trustworthiness. Loyalty, that’s a life of not gossiping and not tearing down other people. And a life of integrity, what you are in public is what you are in secret.

So, what does a person do?

Here are five ways to develop those five character qualities.

1. Help others succeed. That creates likability. When you help other people in your office succeed, guess what? They’re going to like you. When you help your boss succeed, your boss will like you. Likability comes when you help other people reach their goals.

2. Improve myself daily. That increases your capacity. You’re learning more, so you’re more valuable to the company, your family, and yourself. If you’re always learning, you’re always growing. So, learn something every day.

3. Never make excuses. Do you know how rare that is? That’ll make you stand out. The person who never makes excuses demonstrates reliability. If you never make excuses at work, you’re going to be considered a reliable person.

4. Eliminate gossip. That shows loyalty. It shows loyalty to your business and your boss.

5. Safeguard my lifestyle. That protects your integrity. Create a series of things that you’re not going to do. These are the parameters you’re building around your life.

So, which of the five character traits (likability, love of learning, reliability, loyalty, integrity) do you find most challenging to develop and maintain in your workplace? What specific situations or circumstances make that trait difficult for you?

Leave a comment below and let me know. I’d love to hear about your experience..
