Watch Your Words: They’re Leading Even When You’re Not

Sometimes our words are like a sledgehammer. We swing away without thinking and then we’re surprised to find ourselves in a pile of relational rubble. When you use your words to tear people down, your relationships and your leadership are going to suffer.

When it comes to your mouth, think of it as a power tool. It has the power to tear something down, but it also has the power to build something. As a leader, your words aren’t just personal; they’re cultural. They ripple through teams, shape narratives, and either reinforce or dismantle psychological safety. What you say, how you say it, and even what you leave unsaid—all of it builds your organization’s internal architecture.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” One reason we’re not effective with our words is we don’t realize that our mouths and words are impactful tools. You may remember something someone said to you carelessly in elementary school. That’s how powerful words are! Just as you have to be cautious with power tools, you have to learn to use your words with care.

How can you use your words more carefully?

1. Stop excusing. Stop saying, “I didn’t really mean to say that” or “That’s just how I am before my first cup of coffee.” You can choose the right words at any time, no matter how you feel.

2. Talk less. We often get in trouble because we just don’t know when to stop talking. If you use your mouth as a precision tool, then you don’t have to keep hammering away.

3. Listen more. When you take the time to listen, you can better understand someone’s needs and why they may be choosing to use sledgehammer words themselves. Be curious about what’s not being said as well.

4. Start building. When you meet someone, let your first thoughts be, “How can I use a word of encouragement to build then up?” or “What can I say to make a difference in their life?” Great leaders build people, and people build great companies.
